If something is not perceived positively, most of the time people assume that it is a very bad thing to do. This logic is carried from alcohol drinking to smoking pipes. While it cannot be denied that these things can be very unhealthy for people if done all day long, however if a fine balance is maintained with proper self-control then there is a middle ground available. The person is not going to be harmed if such things are taken in moderation. Generally it is made out like someone has to use such things either too much or not at all. No moderate ground seems to be possible. But in fact, this middle ground is quite wide and there is space available to still enjoy these things.
This concept can be understood better if people figured it out that anything in excess can be bad for health. For overweight people dieting can be a good thing but if one becomes obsessive even without being overweight then it leads to health problems like anorexia. Even simple things like watching television is informative and enjoyable but can be considered bad if one gets addicted to it and stops interacting with family and friends. Things like salt are needed by the body but an overuse of it can lead to some peculiar health problems.
The advertisements are also part of the problem which campaign in a way that stresses the fact of all or nothing approach. Ads campaigns by cigarette companies were run which made it seem like smoking all the time was okay. The message has got ingrained in public psych and has been associated with cigarettes and smoking pipes. Most people do not realize that if enjoyed in moderation every now and then, cigarettes do not lead to any health problem. The dangerous thing is when one gets addicted to it.
Part of the problem is that most people are unable to maintain self-control in these matters and suffer from addictive nature. Once addicted, they are unable to get out of the difficult situation. They are unable to find a middle ground. Some people want to consume hard drinks all the time and then try to restrict themselves to not drinking at all to overcome the problem. They realize late that they cannot have even a single drink and this leads to their falling back in the addictive pattern once again.
For this reason it is necessary to understand that moderate drinking or smoking pipes is not bad. However if someone is going to become addicted to it, then it is better to keep away from it. With the help of self-control one can enjoy these things every now and then without encountering any health problems.
